The brand KangaROOS was founded by the passionate runner Bob Gramm in 1979. Initially Gramm’s shoes were known fort their small pockets attached to theirs sneaker, where people could stow small items like keys or loose change. This has become a trademark for Gramm’s shoes and inspired him to name his brand KangaROOS, in reminiscent of the marsupials in the nature.
Especially in the 1980ies the brand received popularity through sponsorships within sports like running, basketball, football and baseball. In 1980 the marathon legend Bill Rodgers wins the Boston Marathon in his ROOS Combat and the ROOS Sky Walker became a classic in the NBA.
