The name Havaianas comes from Portuguese and means Hawaiian. The design of the first Havaianas pair, developed in 1962, is inspired by the traditional Japanese Zori sandals, the soles of which are made of rice straw. Therefore, the texture of the rubber sole still resembles grains of rice today, one of the many small details that make Havaianas so distinctive.
By 1964, almost every worker in Brazil was wearing a pair of Havaianas. Commercial travelers drove in their VW buses to the Brazilian towns in the country to sell Havaianas directly from their delivery van. These buses were always greeted with great enthusiasm and the shoes were sold in simple plastic bags.
